PV boom region – Central Germany
Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia - Central Germany for short - has, in recent years, developed into one of the leading regions for PVs in the world. Within a small area, there is a concentration of production, research organisations and educational institutions involved in silicon-based PV. The German PV industry has so far invested more than 10 billion Euros in the creation and expansion of production capacity, a further 10 billion is planned. The investments in this respect have mainly been in Central Germany. Close co-ordination of issues at a project level is intended to further expand the Solar Valley cluster’s position as a global leader. With investments from industry and public funding, grid parity* should soon be achieved and PVs should be established as a vital part of the global energy market.
Solar electricity should in future be generated more cheaply than electricity from conventional sources. To do this, the production costs for solar modules must fall significantly and efficiency must increase.
In order to achieve these aims we follow a three-level strategy.
*Grid parity means that solar electricity generation costs are less than the consumer’s current electricity costs
